ArcheAge Chronicles

Classes

The four classes and eight weapons

There is no class mixing in ArcheAge Chronicles. You pick one of four classes, then one of its two weapons, and the weapon is what actually shapes your kit. This is the full matrix.

The original ArcheAge let you stitch three skill trees into hundreds of class combinations. ArcheAge Chronicles does not. You choose a class, and the class gives you two weapons with separate trait trees. The Early Access build ships four classes and eight weapons, and XLGAMES has said a third weapon for each class is planned for the road to full release.

What "two weapons" actually means

A weapon is not a cosmetic swap. Each weapon has its own trait tree, and the tree contains three kinds of nodes: small stat boosts that carry you along a path, brand-new skills, and modifiers that change how an existing skill behaves. Because the trees branch, two Greatsword Warriors can end up with genuinely different kits.

The official example is the clearest one. One Greatsword path unlocks Armor Break and converts sunder into Sweeping Slash: two hits instead of one, with a wider cleave arc. The other path grants Pummel Strike, an attack you can use while guarding that also grants a shield to absorb damage. Same weapon, one aggressive build and one defensive build.

That has a practical consequence for a new player: you are not picking a class for its fantasy, you are picking the weapon whose moment-to-moment combat you enjoy. The class is the wrapper.

So which one?

Rather than rank them, match the weapon to the way you already play fights.

  • You like reacting. Longsword Warrior. Blocks and parries convert defence into damage, and mistakes are recoverable.
  • You like big commitments. Greatsword Warrior or Warhammer Berserker. Slow swings, huge numbers, and a real cost for whiffing.
  • You like being hard to kill. Axe and Shield Berserker. The most forgiving frontline kit, with crowd control to bail out a bad pull.
  • You like kiting and precision. Longbow Ranger. Rewards spacing and punishes greed harder than any other weapon.
  • You like fast melee with an escape. Hatchet Ranger. Evasion and counterattacks, closer to an assassin than an archer.
  • You like area control. Elemental Staff Mage. Fire, lightning and chained casts that reward holding a good position.
  • You like weird hybrid kits. Wavesword Mage. Frost, freeze and melee range on a class that normally stands back.

Gender locks are temporary

At Early Access, classes are gender-locked. XLGAMES has confirmed additional gender options are in development and will arrive gradually, starting with select classes rather than all at once. If the character you want to play is locked to a gender you do not want, that restriction is on a removal path, not permanent.

What the classes share

Every class gets the same six stats, the same stat-point economy and the same access to Nui Tears, Coilstones and treasure. Nothing in the class choice locks you out of life skills, housing, trading or dungeons. A Warrior can craft, a Mage can run trade routes, and a Berserker can solo a dungeon if the player is good enough.

What differs is the answer to "the boss is winding up, what do I do". Every class page covers that question for its two weapons:

Before you commit

Two pieces of advice that save rerolls.

Try both weapons before level ten. The trait tree does not open up immediately, but the basic animation and reach of each weapon do. If the Greatsword feels like walking through mud now, it will feel like that forever, no matter how good the numbers get.

Do not pick a class for the dungeon queue. ArcheAge Chronicles is not built around trinity queues. Dungeons run for one to four players, quest progress is shared inside, and the game lets you solo them. There is no healer slot to fill, which means there is no "we need a healer" pressure pushing you into a class you do not enjoy.

Once you have a weapon, the next decision is where its trait points go. Weapon traits and Raeven's Coilstones is the page that explains how to earn them and how the branches change a kit.
